Mini GOLM: Organizers appeal for blood donors

RUTLAND, Vt. – With less than a week to go before the Gift-of-Life Summer Mini Marathon Blood Drive and appointments running below targets, organizers today issued an appeal for donors to sign up right away.

“We have just over 300 appointments so far, but we’d like to be closer to 400,” said organizer Steve Costello from Green Mountain Power.  “We urge anyone who is eligible to donate to sign up and help ensure an adequate blood supply as we head into the heart of summertime.”

The Gift-of-Life Summer Mini Marathon will be held Tuesday, July 22, from noon to 6 p.m., at the Paramount Theatre.  Appointments, which are strongly suggested, may be made by calling 800-RED-CROSS or by visiting

Walk-ins will be accepted but appointments help ensure a faster, smoother process.  The goal is to collect 400 pints of blood, which will boost always-low summer supplies.

“Besides the holiday period in December, mid-summer brings the greatest challenge to the blood supply, which never takes a vacation,” said WJJR Program Director Terry Jaye, co-organizer of the event.

The summer drive was borne of the annual December Gift-of-Life Marathon, which collected 2,350 pints of blood and shattered the national one-day blood drive record of 1,968 pints last year.  The event is sponsored by GMP and WJJR, with support from the Paramount Theatre.
